From the sūtra's words "Having spoken this dhāraṇī..." downward is the third [part], obtaining benefit. In reality, the remaining sentient beings also gained benefit, but because Maitreya was supreme, other sentient beings are not mentioned. Question: Why was Maitreya not listed among the gathered assembly? Answer: Upāli and Ānanda were also in the assembly and yet not listed; these were all part of the old assembly, and therefore not listed. "Arising from his seat" symbolizes the samādhi he attained. "Adjusting his robes" symbolizes the four postures, because his virtuous conduct regarding the seven actions was perfected. "Joining his palms" symbolizes his mind harmonizing with the object and spiritually merging with principle, which is the perfection of wisdom that illuminates both the ultimate and the conventional. "Standing before the Buddha" symbolizes that his mind is unmoving because he has realized samādhi.
