Where the sūtra states, "The first great spirit was named," onward: fifth [error for second], this explains them individually; because there are five, it constitutes five sections. This is the first. Because internally one upholds morality through the seven limbs [of bodily and vocal karma], externally it rains the seven treasures. Second, because internally one cultivates samādhi, virtuous flowers grow from the water. Third, because internally one cultivates the aggregate of wisdom, by means of wisdom one expounds the Dharma to benefit beings and remove the stench of ignorance, and externally it rains fragrance. "Seven circuits" signifies eliminating the seven outflows; the seven outflows are as explained in the Nirvāṇa Sūtra, referring to view, mindfulness, and so forth. Fourth, because internally one cultivates liberation, through superior resolve, joy, and bliss, one causes beings to abandon sorrow and suffering, and externally it rains cintāmaṇi gems. "Those with bodhi-intent" refers to persons seeking bodhi. Fifth, because internally one cultivates the knowledge and vision of liberation, by means of the water of wisdom, the flowers of correct awakening are generated externally. Alternatively, it is said that the five spirits are manifested due to the five precepts.
