什曰：世有危難，稱名自歸。菩薩觀其音聲，即得解脫也。亦名觀世念，亦名觀自在也。
[Kumāra]jīva says: When there is peril or distress in the world, people recite his name and take refuge. The bodhisattva perceives their voices and they instantly obtain liberation. He is also named Guanshi'nian (Contemplator of the World's Thoughts) and also named Guanzi'zai (Sovereign Contemplator).
