[Kumāra]jīva says: The Sanskrit text says 'vinaya'. 'Vinaya' means skillful regulation. Skillfully regulating sentient beings causes them to abandon evil and practice good. In accordance with how much evil they abandon and the depth of the good they practice, his land is formed. 'Tamed' shares the same purport but its phrasing is implicit, so the original [term] is preserved. [Seng]zhao says: In accordance with the depth or shallowness of the sentient beings tamed, he acquires the beauty or ugliness of the buddha-land. [Dao]sheng says: Although transformation has already subsumed it, its name pertains to the beginning. That [stage] cannot lack taming, so it is appropriate to clarify it. If they are not tamed, then there is no land of the seven precious jewels.
