[Seng]zhao says: Freedom from flattery and the straightforward mind are different names for a single practice. When the bodhisattva's mind is straightforward, he transforms others to be like himself; once his own land is established, those of identical practice gather there. This explains that because conditions for conversion reach each other, karmic retributions are linked, and so the meaning of a buddha-land becomes evident. In what follows, the pairs of sentences correspond: sometimes earlier and later are different names, sometimes earlier is concise and later extensive, or earlier is cause and later effect, being analogous to causal practice. In general, wholesome practices are of two kinds: first, wholesome deeds; second, wholesome retributions. From here on, what the sentient beings practice are all wholesome retributions. [Dao]sheng says: The meaning of bringing about a land has already been set forth above; now it only explains that the manifold practices are the basis for purifying a land. This can clearly be grasped, which is why it says, 'Ratnakūṭa, you should know,' knowing as explained before. To answer his question, it specifically relies on phenomenal purity to manifest the genuine mind free from defilement. This is the root of wholesome practices, hence it is explained first. Sentient beings free from flattery are one matter of purity. The bodhisattva is spoken of in terms of his practice, and sentient beings are spoken of in terms of their retribution; that they are spoken of in contrast clarifies that sentient beings formerly received this teaching and now have this fruit. When the bodhisattva's practice is completed, his response belongs to the buddha. Summarizing beforehand regarding the land, it says they 'come to be born.'
