[Kumāra]jīva says: The purity of buddha-lands has different gradations: some are like [the heaven of] the Four Heavenly Kings, up to being like the six [desire] heavens; or like the Brahma heavens, up to being like the Pure Abodes; or some surpass the Pure Abodes. Those surpassing the Pure Abodes are lands where only bodhisattvas of one lifetime remaining are born. Conforming to the minds of the assembly, different lands are manifested. What Sikhin saw was like the palace of the Paranirmita-vaśavartin Heaven, which was again just what he was suited to see, and did not exhaust its purity. Below, it says that it is like the Jewel-Adorned Buddha-land; that is Śākyamuni's true, retribution-pure land. The pure land is right in this world, as taught in the 'Duration of Life' chapter of the Lotus Sūtra. This purity and defilement share the same place without mingling, just as two kinds of food can be in a single vessel, corresponding to two kinds of sentient beings. / [Seng]zhao says: Those with the same sound harmonize together; those with the same view accord with each other. The Brahma King is indeed a dharmakāya mahāsattva; relying on the Buddha's pure wisdom, everything he sees is pure, and based on what he sees, he bears witness to it. Moreover, the true purity of the buddha-land transcends the three realms; how could it merely be like the worldly purity of a heavenly palace? This is simply speaking in accordance with what he saw. Śāriputra, being among humans, sees its earth and stones; the Brahma King, dwelling in heaven, sees it like a heavenly palace; what others see is also each different. This is the meaning of how the buddha-land responds. / [Dao]sheng says: The Brahma King Sikhin manifests traces in saṃsāra, and wrongly infers that since both are enjoying retribution in the three realms as purity, he knows that those without merit bring this defilement upon themselves; thus Śākyamuni's land is no different from a heavenly palace, using this to question Śāriputra's lack of penetration as great delusion.
