'If the buddhakṣetra becomes completely pure to the extent that one's own living beings are completely pure, then when the Bhagavān Śākyamuni engaged in the conduct of a bodhisattva, was his mind not pure, since this buddhakṣetra appears so impure?' Then the Bhagavān, knowing Śāriputra's thought, said: 'Śāriputra, what do you think? If the sun and moon are not seen by a blind man, is it the fault of the blind man, or the fault of the sun and moon?' 'Śāriputra, likewise, living beings are hindered by a lack of merit and the eye of ignorance; it is not the fault of the Tathāgata that living beings do not see the many ornamental qualities of the buddhakṣetra. Śāriputra, the Tathāgata's buddhakṣetra is completely pure, yet you do not see it.' Then Brahmā Śikhin said to Śāriputra: 'Do not say that the buddhakṣetra is impure! The buddhakṣetra is completely pure. Śāriputra, for example, just as the abode of the devas of Paranirmitavaśavartin is adorned, we see this buddhakṣetra of the Bhagavān Śākyamuni adorned with qualities.' Brahmā said: 'Venerable Śāriputra, because your mind is not completely pure and conceptualizes unevenness, and your intention toward the Buddha's jñāna is impure, you see the buddhakṣetra like that. Śāriputra, all those living beings whose mental intentions are completely pure and whose intentions toward the Buddha's jñāna are completely pure see this buddhakṣetra as completely pure.'
