[Seng]zhao says: The buddha-land is constantly pure; how could it wait for transformation before being adorned? Pressing the earth was merely transforming what the sins of the multitude saw. The Jewel-Adorned Land is the foremost among pure lands; therefore it was used as an illustration. / [Dao]sheng says: Transforming the earth with spiritual power clarifies the transcendence of defilement into purity. It illustrates that although rocks and sand are defiled, when it comes to departing from evil, there can be no difference. Moreover, manifesting this transformation shows that there are no fixed signs, so as to dispel the attachment to defilement and lead them to grasp the principle of purity.
