[Kumāra]jīva says: This means that although one enters the concentration of cessation, one can manifest immeasurable transformations to respond to living beings.
[Seng]zhao says: When the Hīnayāna enters the concentration of cessation, the form is like dry wood, lacking any capacity for functioning. When the mahāsattva enters the samādhi of the true mark, mind and cognition are eternally extinguished while his form fills the eight extremities; responding to capacity he acts, his responsive encounters knowing no bounds. In raising, moving, advancing, and stopping, he does not abandon the deportments. His quiet sitting is also consummate! Above he said, 'not manifesting body and mind in the three realms', while here he says, 'manifesting all bodily deportments'. Because there is no manifestation, he is able to leave nothing unmanifest; leaving nothing unmanifest is the very substance of non-manifestation. May the gentlemen who explore the profound have the means to grasp wherein they are the same, and assimilate wherein they differ.
