肇曰：夫大悲所以建、大乘所以駕、佛恩所以報、三寶所以隆，皆由明了人根、善開實相。而目連備闕斯事，故以誨之。

[Seng]zhao says: The reasons why great compassion is established, the Mahāyāna is driven forward, the Buddha's kindness is repaid, and the Three Jewels flourish, all stem from clearly understanding human faculties and skillfully opening up the real mark. Maudgalyāyana was completely lacking in these matters, so he instructed him.
