[Kumāra]jīva says: He went forth before the Buddha and was foremost in dhūta [practices]. Once in the past, coming out from the mountains, his body filthy and wearing coarse, worn-out robes, he came to where the Buddha was. When the bhikṣus saw him, they gave rise to thoughts of disdain. Wishing to eliminate the bhikṣus' arrogance, the Buddha praised him, saying, 'Welcome, Kāśyapa,' and divided his seat to share it. Kāśyapa declined, saying, 'The Buddha is the Great Master, and I am a disciple. How could we sit together?' The Buddha said, 'My dhyāna, samādhi, liberation, wisdom, great benevolence, and great compassion to teach and transform sentient beings are also like this in you. What difference is there?' Having heard this, the bhikṣus gave rise to a sense of the extraordinary and all paid reverence. Having heard this, Kāśyapa constantly emulated the Buddha's practice of compassion to rescue those who suffer. Having such compassion, yet abandoning the rich to follow the poor, what was his intention? He considered that poor people did not plant merit in the past, thus incurring this retribution. If they are not saved now, in future lives it will be even worse. Also, approaching the rich incurs suspicions of seeking fame and gain; furthermore, he did not consider future lives as they presently enjoy pleasure; also, rich people are arrogant and heedless, difficult to open and transform; also, poor people perceive suffering and their mind of weariness is easily obtained. Arising from abandonment must stem from divergent views; therefore [Vimalakīrti] criticized him for not being universal, and instructed him in equality. [Seng]zhao says: Kāśyapa was foremost among the disciples in ascetic practice, born of the brahmin caste, with the family name Kāśyapa.
