生曰：大迦葉，少欲行頭陀中第一也。得滅盡三昧亦最勝。凡得滅盡定者，能為人作現世福田也。其自以幸能使人得現世報，而貧有交切之苦，故以大悲欲拔之也。乞食，是頭陀之業。又至貧里，有會少欲之迹。

[Dao]sheng says: Mahākāśyapa is foremost among those of few desires who practice dhūta. His attainment of the samādhi of cessation is also supreme. Whoever attains the absorption of cessation can serve as a field of merit for people in the present life. He considered himself fortunate to be able to cause people to obtain retribution in the present life, and the poor suffer severe distress; therefore, out of great compassion, he wished to deliver them. Begging for food is the vocation of dhūta. Furthermore, reaching a poor lane matches the manifest trace of having few desires.
