"Why is this? I recall in the past when I went on alms rounds in poor neighborhoods." This is the second part, briefly explaining the reason. Going to the poor has two meanings: first, because of having few desires; second, because of great compassion. Also, because Kāśyapa was the most supreme among the disciples in these two respects, he was rebuked. Daosheng says: "Mahākāśyapa is foremost among those with few desires who practice the dhūtas. He is also the most supreme in attaining the samādhi of cessation. In general, those who attain the absorption of cessation are able to act as a field of merit in the present life for people. Because of his own karma, he can cause people to obtain retribution in the present Dharma, and since poverty involves urgent and intense suffering, with a mind of great compassion he wished to pull them out of it. Begging for food is the practice of his dhūta, and furthermore, going to poor neighborhoods accords with the traces of having few desires."
