[Kumāra]jīva says: The ocean has three virtues: first, it is deep, broad, and boundless; second, it is pure and does not admit miscellaneous defilements; third, it stores and accumulates immeasurable precious gems. The three virtues of a bodhisattva are identical in meaning to the ocean. [Seng]zhao says: The ocean has five virtues: first, it is limpid and does not admit dead corpses; second, it produces many wondrous treasures; third, when great dragons pour down rain in drops like wagon axles, it receives them without overflowing; fourth, wind and sun cannot exhaust it; fifth, its abyss is deep and hard to measure. The mahāsattva's mind is pure and does not admit the corpses of broken precepts; it produces the treasures of luminous wisdom; when the great Dharma-rain of the buddhas falls, it receives it without overflowing; the wind and sun of demonic heterodoxy cannot diminish it; and his wisdom is abyssal and immeasurable. Therefore it is said: 'His mind was vast as the ocean.'
