"Abiding in the deportment of the Buddha, his mind was as vast as the ocean." The eighth is complete propriety. Sengzhao says: "In his movements, advances, and retreats, he did not fail [in proper conduct]." The sage's deportment is like the ocean, which has five virtues: first, it is clear and pure, not harboring dead corpses; second, it produces many wondrous gems; third, when great dragons pour down rain in drops like axle-trees, it receives them without overflowing; fourth, wind and sun cannot deplete it; fifth, it is abyssal and difficult to fathom. The mahāsattva's mind is pure, not harboring corpses of broken precepts; it produces the gems of radiant wisdom; it receives the Buddha's great Dharma-rain without overflowing; the wind and sun of māras and tīrthikas cannot diminish it; and his wisdom is so abyssal that none can fathom it. Therefore it is said: "his mind was as vast as the ocean."
