2.7

什曰：功德業也。肇曰：樹德先聖，故善本深殖也。此經之作起于淨名，其微言幽唱亦備之後文。出經者欲遠存其人以弘其道教，故此一品全序其德也。

[Kumāra]jīva says: This is the activity of merit. [Seng]zhao says: He established virtues before the past sages; hence his roots of goodness were deeply planted. The composition of this sūtra originated from Pure Name, and his subtle words and profound declarations are also fully provided in the later text. The translator of the sūtra wished to preserve this person far into the future so as to propagate his path and teachings; hence this entire chapter prefaces his virtues.
