"At that time, in the great city of Vaiśālī, there was an elder named Vimalakīrti." Sengzhao says: "The […] of this sūtra arose from Jingming. His subtle words and profound declarations were fully prepared for it. Later, those who produced the sūtra wished to preserve this person for the distant future in order to propagate his teaching. Therefore, this whole chapter fully recounts his virtues." The chapter text has two parts: first, praising his virtues; second, benefiting beings. In the first part, it praises his two bodies, the origin and the traces: the ten virtues of the dharmakāya are the origin, and the three karmic activities of the response-body are the traces. Tiantai says: "Noble persons in the West are called 'elders'; all possess ten virtues. Now Jingming is an elder of the dharmakāya, and his ten virtues are likewise so." The ten virtues are as given in the outline. "Having previously made offerings to immeasurable buddhas, he had deeply planted good roots." The first is noble lineage: planting [roots under] buddhas, hearing the Dharma, and being born from the transformation of the Dharma. Sengzhao says: "Having cultivated virtue under past sages, his good roots were deeply planted."
