什曰：長夜誓願世世常作持律，故於今持律第一也。肇曰：優波離，秦言上首。弟子中持律第一。

[Kumāra]jīva says: "Throughout the long night [of saṃsāra], he vowed life after life to constantly uphold the Vinaya; hence now he is foremost in upholding the Vinaya." [Seng]zhao says: "Upāli means in the language of Qin 'Foremost Head.' Among the disciples, he is foremost in upholding the Vinaya."
