什曰：秦言歡喜也。問曰：阿難持佛法藏，即其所聞足知無病。今云何不達？答曰：真實及方便悉是佛語，故二說皆信。又云：阿難亦共為方便也。肇曰：阿難，秦言歡喜。弟子中總持第一。

[Kumāra]jīva says: “In Qin, it means ‘rejoicing’. Question: ‘Ānanda preserved the Buddha’s treasury of Dharma; from what he heard, he was quite aware that the Buddha has no illness. Why did he not understand now?’ Answer: ‘Both the ultimate and the expedient are the Buddha’s words, so he believed both teachings. It is also said that Ānanda was cooperating in this upāya.’ ” [Seng]zhao says: “Ānanda means ‘rejoicing’ in Qin. Among the disciples, he is foremost in total retention (dhāraṇī).”
