3.77

[Kumāra]jīva says: Only if you yourself know that you have faults as deep as this, can you take the food. [Seng]zhao says: One who commits grave offenses cannot enter the ranks of the worthy and noble, and ultimately cannot attain extinction [nirvāṇa]. Only if one can possess all the aforesaid evils can one take the food. Why is this? Turning away from evil and following good is simply the ordinary sentiment of men. Yet, when right and wrong pass through the mind, one is still not free from encumbrance. Therefore, those of equal vision consider retaining good to be an affliction, and so abandon good to seek the fundamental principle; they consider abandoning evil to be an encumbrance, and so approach evil to return to the root. Thus approaching evil has the efficacy of forgetting encumbrances, and abandoning good has the merit of non-defilement. Hence we know that being in accord with the good is not yet an attainment, nor is being in accord with evil a loss. The meaning of Pure Name's words seems to lie herein.
