"'not entering the assembly, and ultimately not attaining extinction—if you can be like this, only then may you take the food.'" Those who see the noble truths enter the assembly of the noble; those who sever afflictions can reach extinction. In the true mark there is neither seeing nor non-seeing, hence one does not enter the assembly. In tranquil extinction there is neither attainment nor non-attainment, hence one does not attain extinction. If one can abide in true equality like this, this is the true worthy of offerings, and only then may one take the food. Sengzhao says: Abandoning evil to pursue good is merely the common sentiment of ordinary men. Yet when right and wrong weigh upon the mind, one is still not free from burden. Therefore, one who views equally regards clinging to good as a malady, and thus abandons good to seek the ultimate principle; regarding the abandoning of evil as a burden, he reaches the root right within evil. Thus, right within evil there is the merit of forgetting burdens; abandoning good has the virtue of being unstained. Therefore we know that agreeing with the good is not yet an attainment, and agreeing with evil is not yet a loss. Vimalakīrti's meaning seems to lie in this.
