[Seng]zhao says: The myriad practices of the Mahāyāna are divided into two kinds of deeds: taking knowledge as the hallmark of practice, deeds of knowledge are distinctively established; because the various practices follow along, deeds of virtue are collectively established. All that is cultivated and established is not accomplished by a single kind of deed. Yet the various sūtras tie cultivating marks and purifying lands to deeds of virtue, and tie knowing thoughts and expounding the Dharma to deeds of knowledge. This merely draws upon where their functions predominate; they are never without each other.
