5.134

什曰：令其推己而悲物也。當念言：我今微疾，苦痛尚爾；況惡趣眾生受無量苦也。肇曰：勸疾者，推己之疾愍於他疾也。生曰：我有智慧猶有疾苦，況乃不達者乎。推己愍彼是兼濟之懷，豈得自畏死焉？

[Kumāra]jīva says: Cause them to infer from themselves and have compassion for other beings. One should think: 'Even with my slight illness now, the pain is still like this; how much more so for sentient beings in the evil destinies who undergo immeasurable suffering!' [Seng]zhao says: This encourages the sick to infer from their own illness to have pity on the illnesses of others. [Dao]sheng says: 'Even I, who have wisdom, still have the suffering of illness; how much more so those who do not understand!' Inferring from oneself to pity others is the attitude of universal salvation; how could one fear death for oneself?
