[Seng]zhao says: The practice of the Mahāyāna is devoid of words and characteristics, yet the word 'subduing' was given form in the preceding text. Now, about to clarify the purport beyond words, he therefore does not abide in either. Not abiding in either is the original intent of relying on words; the original intent of relying on words is the utmost of subduing. [Dao]sheng says: He merely does not cherish subduing in mind; it does not mean he is unsubdued.
