[Kumāra]jīva says: Mount Sumeru is the essence of earth. This is the earth element; below, water, fire, wind, and earth, the four great elements, are explained. Deluded people say that the four great elements possess spirits, and also say that they are the greatest, or that they are permanent. Now they are subdued by the power of the Way, demonstrating that they are not spirits. Inserting it into a tiny mustard seed demonstrates that it is not large. The vast and minute containing each other and things having no fixed substantial nature demonstrates that it is not permanent. All this reverses their attachments and uproots their deep stagnation, so as to remove their habitual assumptions and give them a path to return to the source.
