8.146

什曰：欲令聞而信者發道心也。此三事，請飯之意也。肇曰：餘，卑遜言也。彼土因香以通大道；此國眾生志意狹劣，故請香飯之餘，以弘佛事也。

[Kumāra]jīva says: He wishes to cause those who hear and believe to arouse the aspiration for awakening. These three matters are the purpose of requesting the food. [Seng]zhao says: 'Remnants' is an expression of humility. That land uses fragrance to open up the Great Way; sentient beings of this realm have narrow and inferior aspirations, so he requests the remnants of the fragrant food to broadly carry out buddha-work.
