8.172

什曰：舉其多也。上云說法，亦不必有言說，有因通教，功同說耳。肇曰：其土非都無言，但以香為通道之本。如此國因言通道，亦有因神變而得悟者。

[Kumāra]jīva says: He cites the majority. When it was said above that he 'preaches the Dharma', it also does not necessarily mean verbal exposition; there are cases where the teaching is communicated through other means, the function being equivalent to preaching. [Seng]zhao says: That land is not entirely without words, but fragrance is used as the fundamental basis for communicating the Way. Just as in this country words are used to communicate the Way, there are also those who attain awakening through supernatural transformations.
