[Seng]zhao says: Loving-kindness and compassion serve as the roots, and the initial resolve serves as the mind; after that, one accords with the four means of embracing to transform sentient beings, and protects the true Dharma to plant wholesome roots. Using these manifold virtues to make its branches luxuriant, the tree of the Way flourishes day by day without exhausting conditioned [activity]. The practices and vows detailed below are instances of these branches; as they flourish day by day, they bring about the meaning of not exhausting [the conditioned]. If one casts aside loving-kindness and compassion, the tree of the Way is not established, the manifold virtues dwindle, and one conceals oneself in nirvāṇa—this is called exhausting conditioned dharmas.
