[Kumāra]jīva says: It strictly requires meditative concentration and other merits; it cannot be attained merely by the discrimination of ordinary intellect. It is also said that one must employ real wisdom before one can comprehend it; it cannot be understood by discriminating and grasping marks. [Seng]zhao says: The sūtras of the ultimate truth are subtle, distant, and markless; unless one is truly illumined and wise, who could discriminate them? Although distinctions among karmas arise from discrimination, this cannot be attained through discrimination. Can those who attain it be other than those without discrimination? Therefore it says: 'not merely through discrimination.' [Dao]sheng says: One must accumulate merits before one can accord with it.
