[Kumāra]jīva says: Relying on spiritual superknowledges, he expanded his transformative efficacy, and also used the power of spiritual superknowledges to verify his eloquence. For example, when Nāgārjuna debated with a non-Buddhist, the non-Buddhist asked, 'What are the gods doing right now?' He replied, 'The gods are now fighting with the asuras.' The other asked again, 'By what can this be verified?' The bodhisattva immediately manifested verification for him: instantly, broken weapons fell from the sky along with severed bodies and heads of asuras, and the gods and asuras could be seen lined up in battle arrays facing each other in the sky. Having seen the verification, the non-Buddhist submitted to his eloquence. Superknowledges verifying eloquence are of this kind. [Seng]zhao says: The sūtras say 'bodhisattvas attain the five superknowledges,' and also say 'are complete in the six superknowledges.' Because they attain the forbearance of non-arising and their fetters of the three realms are ended, in comparison to the two vehicles, they are said to have six; in comparison to the Tathāgata, their residual afflictions are not yet ended, so they are said to have five.
