[Kumāra]jīva says: Pṛthagjanas and the Hinayana practice the mind of equanimity in order to relinquish enemies and kin; now he wishes them to practice the mind of equanimity by completely relinquishing all things for the sake of impartial wisdom. Furthermore, within their mind of equanimity they merely perceive sentient beings without conceptual differentiation, which is identical to ignorance; he wishes them to practice wisdom within their mind of equanimity. [Seng]zhao says: Lesser equanimity relinquishes enemies and kin; great equanimity relinquishes the myriad existents. Relinquishing the myriad existents is the very nature of correct wisdom; therefore one practices the mind of equanimity in order to encompass wisdom. [Dao]sheng says: Equanimity takes relinquishing hatred and affection as its disposition. Encompassing wisdom is a wisdom that leaves nothing unencompassed. If one takes the wisdom that leaves nothing unencompassed to be equanimity, then equanimity also leaves nothing unrelinquished.
