[Kumāra]jīva says: Taking birth for the sake of beings while not yet free from afflictions and karma, the nature of afflictions and karma cannot yet be fearless. One must have something to rely on before one can successfully accomplish the great enterprise; hence he asks what to rely on, so that one can proceed without regressing. [Seng]zhao says: Saṃsāra is fearful, and no fear is greater. On what does the mahāsattva of compassionate illness rely so that he can dwell eternally in saṃsāra without considering it fearful? [Dao]sheng says: One who practices true impartiality must enter saṃsāra. Yet speaking in terms of saṃsāra, it is a fearful realm. If one cannot yet escape it, one might be overtaken by it. On what does the bodhisattva rely so as not to fear it?
