[Kumāra]jīva says: It is digested only after seven days for two reasons: If someone eats the fragrant rice and the rice is not digested in due time, their mind would surely become weary and disgusted, so he does not let it last long. It is also said that those who ought to attain the Path are perfumed by the vapour of the rice in due time, and within not more than seven days will surely accomplish the noble Path. Just as with the seven rebirths of the stream-enterer (mārgabīja), the bite of a seven-step snake, and the like, the momentum does not exceed seven. The matter requires no long time, so it is not allowed to exceed seven. [Seng]zhao says: The dissipation of its efficacy after seven days is the ordinary power of the rice. If one is to ascend to the Path by means of the rice, it is essential that one attains what ought to be attained, and only then is it digested. [Dao]sheng says: It does not exceed seven days.
