[Kumāra]jīva says: Either producing flowers and fruits, or producing famous perfumes, or emitting radiance, or preaching the Dharma for them. [Seng]zhao says: The Buddha achieved the Path beneath it, and the tree is named bodhi. There is nowhere this tree's light does not illuminate, nowhere its fragrance does not perfume. Its physical forms and colours are subtle and wondrous, seen according to what one delights in. The tree emits the sounds of the Dharma, heard according to what one delights in. This is the retribution-response tree of the Tathāgata; sentient beings who encounter it naturally awaken to the Path. In this land, the tree is taken as the root of conversion.
