[Kumāra]jīva says: Eliminating physical form so that all is expansive without an image, causing their minds to become empty, vacuous, and tranquil, so that encumbering thoughts naturally extinguish. It is also like Mañjuśrī extinguishing all material forms and manifesting the mark of empty space in order to convert King Ajātaśatru. [Seng]zhao says: For those fond of existence, he preserves the body to display existence; for those fond of emptiness, he extinguishes the body to display emptiness, as explained in the Guhyaka Sūtra. Although the eight marks reside in the body, the body and marks are not identical; the causes on which they depend are different, and therefore the works of a buddha are not the same.
