[Kumāra]jīva says: Afflictions fundamentally have four roots: the three poisons and their equal combination. Twenty-one thousand defilements belong to each one illness; as there are four illnesses, there are eighty-four thousand. Stated generally, there are eighty-four thousand; regarding particular characteristics, they are immeasurable. Now by speaking of eighty-four thousand, immeasurable ones are subsumed, and thus they are called 'gates.' [Seng]zhao says: The three poisons and their equal combination—these four are the roots of affliction. Based on one root, twenty-one thousand afflictions arise, making eighty-four thousand in total. Because from the eighty-four thousand immeasurable defilements issue forth, they are called 'gates.'
