[Kumāra]jīva says: Although receiving the sagely decree, upon seeing the defilement, notions of inferiority arose naturally; because they kept the Buddha's teaching in mind, the thought that arose was slight. Having understood equality, they sincerely repent. [Seng]zhao says: When they first saw the defiled land, they gave rise to notions of inferiority, thinking that the Buddhas and bodhisattvas also had ranks of elevation and descent. Hearing of this work of the Buddha, they now repent and reproach themselves.
