In the analogy, "the gods" illustrates those who see the land. Because the merit of the gods is not the same, the food they see differs; because the practices of human beings are not the same, the land they see is distinct; hence this is taken as an analogy. "Sharing a jeweled vessel" illustrates being in the same land. Using the land to sustain the body is called "eating together." "According to their merit, the color of the food differs" illustrates that because practices are not the same, their seeing of the land is distinct. Within the Buddha's single, perfect, and wondrous land, there are various distinct visions, just as within one dish of food the colors seen are each different; this is what is called "different perceptions of a single substance." Below, he applies the analogy to reveal the doctrine. "So it is, Śāriputra: if a person's mind is pure, then they see the virtue and adornments of this land" applies to the superior gods seeing the food as fine. It should also be said that if a person's mind is defiled, they see the land as impure, applying to the inferior gods seeing the food as inferior, but the text abbreviates and does not state this. The above is the second [section], revealing the pure [land] occasioned by a thought.
