From here below is the third [section], clarifying the benefits of conversion. Within this there are two [parts]: first, the benefit from manifesting the pure [land]; second, the benefit to śrāvakas from returning to the defiled [land]. In the former, "When the Buddha manifested the purity of the country" is the occasion for obtaining benefit. Below, he directly clarifies the benefit. "Those whom Ratnakūṭa led attained [the tolerance of] non-arising": knowing that the land is fundamentally pure and has never been defiled, and that there is no defilement that can arise, they therefore attained [the tolerance of] non-arising. "Eighty-four thousand generated the aspiration for bodhi": beholding the purity, they made aspirations and sought it, which is why they generated the mind [for bodhi]. In the latter, "The Buddha gathered it in, returning it to how it was before" is the occasion for obtaining benefit. Below, he directly reveals the benefit. "Thirty-two thousand separated from dust, removed defilement, and attained the purity of the Dharma-eye": as for awakening to the first fruit [of the path], by seeing the transformation of the land they knew that all conditioned dharmas are impermanent, neither seizing nor clinging, which is called "separating from dust"; internally separating from the afflictions of view is called "removing defilement"; clearly perceiving the truths is called "purity of the Dharma-eye." "Eight thousand monks, without clinging to any dharma, with their defilements ended and their minds liberated, attained the fruit of arhatship": by seeing the transformation of the land, they knew that dharmas of the three realms all lack fixed nature and did not give rise to craving or grasping, which is called "not clinging to dharmas," corresponding to the previous "separating from dust"; internally eliminating craving and attachment is called "defilements ended," corresponding to the previous "removing defilement"; attaining non-learner's wisdom is called "minds liberated," corresponding to the previous "attaining the eye."
