Next, [the Buddha] told Pūrṇa to go and inquire about the illness. "Pūrṇa" is his personal name, translated here as "Full". "Maitrāyaṇī" is the name of his mother, translated here as "Benevolence"; distinguishing him by his mother, he is named Maitrāyaṇīputra. Among the disciples of the Buddha, he was foremost in expounding the Dharma, as explained in the Lotus Sūtra. Therefore, [the Buddha] now told him to go and inquire about the illness. First [the Buddha] addresses him, and then he declines. In declining, first he generally declines as being incompetent, next he explains, and finally he concludes. In the explanation, "Why?" raises a question of his own to introduce what follows, and below he sets it forth directly. In this exposition there are four [points]: first, he presents the original occasion of being rebuked in the past; second, he brings out the words of rebuke; third, from "Then Vimalakīrti entered samādhi" onwards, he reveals his skillful transformation; fourth, from "I reflect that a śrāvaka who does not observe persons […]," he presents his own lowliness and deficiency, reproaching himself through his inferiority. In the first section, "I remember in the past" indicates the time of being rebuked. "In the great forest" states the place of being rebuked. "Expounding [the Dharma] for the newly ordained monks" reveals the incident of being rebuked. What kind of Dharma was he expounding? We only know in general that he expounded the Hīnayāna, but not what kind of Dharma within the Hīnayāna he expounded.
