In the fourth [point], reiterating the rebuke for expounding contrary to their faculties, saying "These monks long ago aroused the great mind, but forgot this intention in the interim" presents their great faculties. "Why do you instruct and guide them with the small?" rebukes him for conferring the small. "I observe that the wisdom of the Hīnayāna is slight and shallow, like a blind person who cannot discern the sharpness or dullness of the faculties of all sentient beings" rebukes him for not knowing their faculties. Vimalakīrti guides him himself; from "I observe the Hīnayāna" onwards brings out what he observed. That their wisdom is slight and shallow like a blind person means that the essence of their wisdom is inferior. That they cannot discern the sharpness or dullness of the faculties of all sentient beings means that the function of their wisdom is narrow. Because their wisdom is slight, they cannot discern all sentient beings; because their wisdom is shallow, they cannot discern the sharpness or dullness of faculties. This concludes the words of rebuke.
