3.64

問曰：欲界有三塗處，何故不說？論言：三塗有苦前逼，識不樂安，故非識處。於色界中，第四禪處何故不說？論言：彼中有無想報殘害心識。又四禪中有五淨居，樂求涅槃殘滅心識，不欲久安，故非識處。無色界中非想天處何故不說？論言：彼中有滅盡定，亦滅心識，識不樂安，故非識處。

Question: In the desire realm there are the three wretched realms; why are they not mentioned? The treatise says: in the three wretched realms, suffering presses upon them, and consciousness finds no joy or security; hence they are not stations of consciousness. In the form realm, why is the fourth dhyāna not mentioned? The treatise says: therein is the retribution of non-conception, which impairs mental consciousness. Furthermore, within the fourth dhyāna are the five pure abodes, where they delight in seeking nirvāṇa, destroying mental consciousness, not wishing to abide long; hence it is not a station of consciousness. In the formless realm, why is the heaven of neither-conception[-nor-non-conception] not mentioned? The treatise says: therein is the concentration of cessation, which also destroys mental consciousness, so consciousness finds no joy or security; hence it is not a station of consciousness.
