Question: In the path of seeing, one severs the ten fetters; for what reason are only these three mentioned? Answer: As the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] explains: because these three are weighty. Therefore they are specifically mentioned. Moreover, although one severs the ten fetters in the path of seeing, the five views and doubt are completely exhausted in the path of seeing and are given the designation of being severed; desire, ill-will, ignorance, and conceit are not exhausted in the path of seeing, and are not designated as severed. Among those that are severed, there are three roots and three subordinates. The view of self is the root, and the extreme view is subordinate; attachment to rules and rituals is the root, and adherence to views is subordinate; doubt is the root, and wrong view is subordinate. The sūtra relies on the roots, and for this reason only mentions severing the [three] fetters; because of severing the three fetters, it speaks of the three purifications.
