3.71

The latter two differ between Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna. If according to Hīnayāna, purification of practice is taught in the path of cultivation, because one gives rise to the undefiled practices of the path of cultivation; and in the path of the stage beyond training, purification of the abandonment of practice is taught, because one has attained the practice that terminates fetters for good. If according to Mahāyāna, the latter two are both in the path of cultivation: from the seventh bhūmi downwards, it teaches purification of practice-abandonment, because one cultivates the practice of terminating fetters; and on the eighth bhūmi and above, it speaks of the supreme purification of contemplating bodhi. Because the stages of the seven purifications are arranged in higher and lower order, it is called 'spreading'. As for 'Bathing this undefiled person': this shows the functional application of the previous eight liberations, the water of samādhi, and the seven purifications. Relying on the previous three virtues, one washes away mental defilements, hence it is called bathing. Who is the one bathed? It means the undefiled person.
