Second, as for identity in verbal designation: as the Mahāparinirvāṇa [Sūtra] says, 'Outsiders and former physicians falsely reckon the permanence, bliss, self, and purity of nirvāṇa. It is like an insect eating wood that happens to form characters: the insect does not know whether it is a character or not a character. A wise person will never say, "This insect understands characters."' Now, in the final age, those who study and sit in meditation, hearing this Mahāyāna Vaipulya sūtra say, 'The nature of lust, anger, and delusion is liberation, is great nirvāṇa, and cannot be extinguished again,' do not investigate the deep meaning, cling to this nominal identity, and claim it to be true liberation. This is the same fault as those former physicians and the insect's carving. This is identity in verbal designation.
