二、明通教位格圓教者，若通教明補處淨、無垢位，但與圓教鐵輪位十信第十願心齊；明佛果但與初發心住齊。此是一往格之，正論優劣，初發心住，以初發心能顯中道法身，斷無明一品為勝也。

Second, clarifying the grading of the perfect teaching by the stages of the shared teaching: the pure, stainless stage of a successor explained in the shared teaching is only equal to the tenth stage of aspiration in the ten faiths of the iron-wheel stage of the perfect teaching; its explanation of the Buddha fruit is only equal to the stage of the initial arousal of the mind. This is grading them at first glance; discussing superiority and inferiority strictly, the stage of the initial arousal of the mind is superior because through first arousing the mind, one can manifest the Dharma-body of the Middle Way and sever one grade of ignorance.
