Seventh, combining person and Dharma to understand the sūtra comprehensively: The 'person' is Vimalakīrti, meaning pure, undefiled, and name/fame, whose three senses were differentiated as before. The 'Dharma' refers to the three dharmas of true nature, real wisdom, and expedient means. If the person were separated from the Dharma, he would not be a person capable of propagating it; if the Dharma were separated from the person, it would not be a Dharma that is propagated. Now person and Dharma accomplish each other: the person is the one who propagates the Dharma, and the Dharma is what is propagated. Clarifying 'pure' in terms of the person is precisely true nature; clarifying 'undefiled' in terms of the person is the sense of real wisdom being free from delusion; clarifying 'name' in terms of the person is expedient means according with capacities and conditions. When person and Dharma combine, he abides in inconceivable liberation and displays various manifestations; hence he can assist the Buddha in propagating the teachings of the three kinds of liberation: using the liberation of expedient means to transform ordinary persons; using the liberation of real wisdom to subdue śrāvakas; using the liberation of true nature to rebuke bodhisattvas.
