Fourth, clarifying that in terms of contemplating the mind, progressing through all dharmas, all are sūtras: All myriad dharmas arise from the mind. If the mind is itself the sūtra, then all dharmas are sūtras. Therefore, the Avataṃsaka Sūtra says: 'If you wish to know the Tathāgata's mind, merely contemplate the minds of sentient beings.' For example, inside a single particle of dust there is a sūtra scroll of a great trichiliocosm, and no one knows it; if someone breaks open this particle of dust, they see the sūtra scroll of the trichiliocosm. If one shatters a single thought of ignorance in sentient beings, all the sūtras spoken by all Buddhas are fully revealed. If a practitioner can use contemplation of the mind to read and recite the mind-sūtra, they will see the buddha-nature and abide in great nirvāṇa; regarding all the sudden, gradual, esoteric, and indeterminate sūtras, they will clearly understand them all. Why is this? Contemplating the arising and ceasing of the mind, one sees all the Tripiṭaka teaching distinctly in its horizontal and vertical aspects; contemplating the mind as non-arising and non-ceasing, one sees all the shared teaching distinctly in its horizontal and vertical aspects; contemplating the mind as nominal, one sees all the distinctive teaching distinctly in its horizontal and vertical aspects; contemplating the middle way of the mind, one sees all the perfect teaching distinctly in its horizontal and vertical aspects. The correlation of the four teachings with the various sūtras is as distinguished previously (also titled Inconceivable Liberation).
