Second, broadly differentiating cause and effect: Because mundane cause and effect are the dharmas of suffering and accumulation, and supramundane cause and effect are the path and cessation, all cause and effect do not go beyond the four truths. However, the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna explain their meaning differently; hence there is the distinction of two kinds of four truths: the Hīnayāna explains the four noble truths of production, while the Mahāyāna explains the four noble truths of non-production. Between these two, two further kinds of four truths are established, namely the four true truths of unconditioned arising and the immeasurable four truths, making four kinds of four truths in total, all of which explain the meaning of cause and effect. These are fully set forth in the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra], and their explanation is made explicit in the Commentary on the Lotus Sūtra.
