Fourth, regarding contemplation of the mind: A later passage says: "In accordance with the purity of their minds, the buddha-land is pure." Contemplating that the mind-nature is fundamentally pure, like empty space, is the realm of the purity of nature. The realm is the land. The contemplative wisdom that awakens to this mind is called the Buddha. Initial contemplation is called the cause; the completion of contemplation is called the effect. If discussed in terms of self-cultivation, it is the master of the mind being undefiled; if discussed in terms of transforming others, it is the mental factors being liberated. The factor of wisdom serves as the prime minister, able to dispel the delusions upon the other factors in order to restore the mind-source to the pure land; therefore it says: "If the mind is pure, the buddha-land is pure."
